Used Steinway Model R Upright Piano

This Hamburg-built Steinway Model R upright piano in rosewood is beautifully ornate, with lovely inlays.

The traditional style music desk folds away inside the piano and it is in very good condition, having been maintained over the years by a very well-respected Steinway technician, who gave the following report:

 

'Re-varnished soundboard,

Re-sprayed and re-felted cast iron frame,

Re-strung with new bass and treble strings and new tuning pins,

New hammer heads and I think new hammer shanks,

New damper heads complete with felts and new damper springs,

New tapes, check leathers and check felts, new spiral springs.

There are other replaced sundry felts like notch cushions and leathers.  The keys are still the original ivory tops and are in good condition.  The tuning pins are nice and tight and thanks to a dehumidifier being run constantly, the tuning has always been very stable. The tone is fairly soft and I always went through the toning after tunings.  The case is in the original French polish as far as I could make out and is in amazing condition.  There are a lot of comprehensively restored pianos out there, and some of them are quite appalling, but this has been done very well and I have always been happy to look after it. I think it was done around 1995-6 because I think I started visiting around 1997.'
