Steinway & Sons A Grand Piano – c1979

This Hamburg Steinway & Sons Model A grand piano dates from 1979 and has received exceptional care throughout its life. Its appealing medium tonal character combines with a clear Steinway voice and relatively light touch. Together, these qualities create a refined instrument with an expressive and rewarding playing experience.

At approximately 188 cm in length, the Model A occupies an appealing position within the Steinway grand piano range. Its proportions provide the presence and tonal scope of a substantial grand without requiring the space of a larger model. As a result, it suits many private homes, teaching studios, music rooms, and smaller performance spaces.

This piano comes from a domestic environment, where previous owners maintained it carefully and invested significantly in servicing over the years. Our experienced Steinway technicians are now completing a comprehensive service and preparation programme in our dedicated workshops. The team includes John Ross, who spent more than 38 years as Head Steinway Technician. Their meticulous preparation will ensure the piano performs to the high musical and mechanical standards expected from an instrument of this calibre.

Within the last five years, technicians have also installed new genuine Steinway Hamburg action rails. Importantly, the piano retains its original hammers and levers, which display relatively little wear. Their condition reflects the careful use and maintenance this instrument has received throughout its life.

Tonally, this Model A offers a lovely medium character with clarity, sparkle, and excellent balance across the keyboard. The instrument provides plenty of tonal colour, giving pianists considerable freedom when shaping phrasing and dynamics. It responds equally well to delicate passages and music requiring greater presence, depth, and expression.

The touch feels relatively light and responsive, providing excellent control throughout the keyboard. This responsive action also complements the piano’s clear tonal character particularly well. If required, our technicians can further adjust the action to suit the preferences of its new owner.

To preserve the piano’s pristine finish, we have applied removable protective film to selected areas of the casework until delivery.
