Steinway & Sons A188 Grand Piano – c1979

This Hamburg Steinway & Sons Model A grand piano was built in 1979 and has been particularly well cared for throughout its life. With its appealing medium tonal character, clear Steinway voice and relatively light touch, it is a piano that offers both musical refinement and an enjoyable, expressive playing experience.

At approximately 188cm in length, the Model A occupies an appealing position within the Steinway grand piano range, providing the presence and tonal scope of a substantial grand while remaining a practical size for many private homes, teaching studios and smaller performance spaces.

This piano has come from a domestic environment and has benefited from careful maintenance and significant servicing over the years. It is currently being fully prepared and serviced in our dedicated workshops by our experienced Steinway technicians, including John Ross, who was Head Steinway Technician for over 38 years.

Within the last five years, the piano has also been fitted with new genuine Steinway Hamburg action rails. The original hammers and levers remain in place and show relatively little wear, reflecting the careful use the instrument has received.

Acoustically, this Model A has a lovely medium character, combining clarity and sparkle with a balanced voice across the keyboard. There is plenty of tonal colour available to the pianist, allowing the instrument to move comfortably between more delicate playing and passages requiring greater presence and expression.

The touch is relatively light and responsive, giving the pianist good control across the keyboard and complementing the piano’s clear tonal character. The action can also be adjusted to suit the preference of its new owner if required. To preserve the piano’s pristine finish, a protective film has been applied to selected areas of the piano to maintain its condition until delivery.
